Ammonium Nitrate
A 34.5% nitrogen fertilizer supplying nitrogen in both nitrate and ammonium form — fast acting and sustained in a single product.
Ammonium nitrate carries 34.5 per cent nitrogen, split roughly evenly between nitrate and ammonium. That split is what makes it agronomically useful: the nitrate half is immediately available to the crop, while the ammonium half is held on soil colloids and released gradually as it nitrifies.
The result is a fertilizer that produces a visible response within days and keeps supplying nitrogen for weeks, which suits top-dressing on cereals and grassland particularly well.
Agronomic behaviour
Nitrate nitrogen moves freely in soil solution and is taken up directly by roots, so response is rapid. Ammonium nitrogen adsorbs to clay and organic matter, resists leaching, and converts to nitrate over two to six weeks depending on soil temperature and moisture.
Because half the nitrogen is already in nitrate form, ammonium nitrate is less prone to volatilisation loss than urea when surface-applied without incorporation. On calcareous soils and in hot, dry conditions that difference can be substantial.
Where it performs best
- Top-dressing winter and spring cereals during stem extension
- Grassland and forage production, particularly after each cut
- Vegetables and horticultural crops needing rapid nitrogen response
- Sugar beet, potatoes and other root crops
- Fertigation, as calcium ammonium nitrate or in solution blends
- Cold-soil early season applications where urea would respond slowly
Handling, storage and regulation
Ammonium nitrate is an oxidiser. It does not burn on its own, but it will vigorously support the combustion of anything that does, and under confinement and severe heating it can detonate. Storage rules are correspondingly strict and vary by jurisdiction.
Keep it away from fuels, oils, organic material, acids, chlorates and metal powders. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated building of non-combustible construction, keep stacks separated with clear access, control ignition sources, and secure the store against unauthorised access. Many countries require registration, purchase records and a declared end use. We supply only against verified end-user documentation and comply with the import and security requirements of the destination market.
Product forms
- Prilled — the standard agricultural form, free-flowing and coated against caking
- Granular — larger particles for improved spreading width and uniformity
- Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) — 26–27% N, diluted with limestone, lower hazard classification
- Solution grades for fertigation and liquid blending
